IT'S OKAY NOT TO BE OKAY

Monday, 13 March 2017

We all have those days where it feels like everything that can go wrong does go wrong, where it feels like everyone else is happy and 'normal' and you're completely out of place, like you're all alone in how you're feeling. You'll have people tell you that you have nothing to feel sad about, that you have it easy compared to some others, and that may be true, but it doesn't mean that you can't or shouldn't feel the way you're feeling. It's okay not to be okay.

Life can be hard. It can be overwhelming, and stressful, and miserable and just downright crappy, and sometimes that can all get too much and leave you feeling down and unhappy. Sometimes it might be that nothing obvious is going wrong, you just feel that way because...well just because. And that's okay too. Sometimes we feel like we have to justify our feelings to others, but the truth is it doesn't matter. You don't have to justify how you're feeling, you don't have to explain yourself if you don't want to. But it's okay to talk to someone about how you're feeling. It's okay to say 'no, not really' when someone asks if you're okay. It's okay to ask for help. It's okay not to be okay.

In today's society, it can seem 'bad' or 'wrong' to show signs of weakness, to struggle, to ask for help...but that's human. We all have things we can't do, we all feel things (especially negative things) deeply, we all need someone else's support now and then. That's okay. It doesn't make you weak, it doesn't make you bad. It doesn't make you any less of a person. It makes you completely and utterly human. We're not perfect, by any stretch of the imagination, and sometimes we just...can't. But it's okay not to cope, it's okay to cry, it's okay to need someone, it's okay to feel. It's okay not to be okay.

Acknowledge your negative feelings. Know that they're there, and know that it's okay to have them. Don't be afraid to admit that you're struggling, don't be afraid to admit that you're having a bad day, or week, or month. Don't apologise for how you're feeling, and don't feel like no one else can relate. We all feel like this, some of us feel it more often than others, some of us feel it more deeply, but we all feel it. We've all been there. Our experiences might not all be the same, but we've all known that feeling. Know that you're not alone. You're not the only person experiencing these feelings. I've had them, chances are someone reading this is having them now. And it's okay to feel them. It's okay to have a bad day. It's okay not to be okay.

Things won't be bad forever. It's okay to want to take your mind off things, it's okay not to want to do anything. But no matter how dark things may seem, there will always be someone there to help guide you to the light at the end of the tunnel, and that light will always be there. So know that the way you're feeling is okay. Know that you're not alone. Know that you're allowed to feel the way you're feeling. And know: it's okay not to be okay.

You never know what someone is going through, or how they may be feeling. So let's all show each other a little more love and compassion. Let everyone know that someone is always there. Let everyone know you get those feelings too. And let everyone know, it's okay not to be okay.

you rise as the whole damn fire."

  1. Such beautiful words and you're definitely right, what you are feeling doesn’t make you a rubbish person, it makes you human. Plus it's not good to compare to how others feel. Of course it's good to count your blessings and try and be positive, but just because someone has it worse it does not mean you can't be sad at all! So totally agree it's okay to not be okay regardless of who you are/what's going on :) xx

  3. Such a beautiful post! And so relatable. From someone who went through a really uncool period lately, I absolutely agree. You don't have to be okay all the time and you should be free to express how you feel. xx Corinne

  4. This is such a beautiful and well-written post. Far too many people beat themselves up for experiencing negative emotions, as if we should be ashamed for having days where things get a little bit too much. The healthiest thing a person can do is acknowledge negative feelings and work on them, not brush them under the carpet. It is absolutely okay not to be okay! xxx

  8. Thiiiis. There are some days where I'm feeling so blah and I start questioning my whole life. I get so anxious and doubt everything. It feels like a lot. It's all these negative emotions hitting me at once, and then the next day, I'm chill. It's weird how we as people get into these periods of "not okay" seemingly out of nowhere. I guess they make us appreciate the good times.

    1. Totally get what you mean. Some days I'm just so down and then the next I'm super happy. I think we all have to go through times of 'not being okay' to learn and grow from them xx

  9. Such a beautifully written post, saying all the things that people need to hear. It can be a flip of coin sometimes I wake up and the world might as well have ended, finally talking about it was the best thing I ever did. It's ok not to be ok is like a motto of mine now xx
